IELTS Band Score System

IELTS uses a 9-band scale where each module (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) receives an individual band score. These four scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest 0.5 to give the Overall Band Score.

Band Level Description Typical Requirement
9.0 Expert Full operational command of English with complete accuracy Top-tier global universities
8.0 Very Good Fully operational command with only occasional errors Postgrad programs, UK immigration
7.0 Good Operational command with occasional inaccuracies Most Australian & UK universities
6.5 Competent+ Generally effective command with some inaccuracies Common minimum for undergraduate admission
6.0 Competent Generally effective in familiar contexts AU/NZ immigration, many UK colleges
5.5 Modest Partial command, copes with overall meaning Some pathway programs
⚠️

Many universities and immigration bodies require minimum scores in each individual band (e.g., no band below 6.0), not just the overall score. Always check institution-specific requirements before applying.

IELTS Study Strategies for Nepali Students

Listening
Practice with diverse accents daily using BBC Radio, TED Talks, and official Cambridge IELTS audio. Focus on predicting answers during the preparation time before each section plays.
Reading
Practice skimming (gist) and scanning (specific facts) separately. Strictly allocate 20 minutes per passage. Never spend more than 90 seconds on any single question.
Writing Task 1
Memorize templates for different visual types (line graphs, bar charts, maps, processes). Practice writing the overview sentence — it is the single most important element in Task 1.
Writing Task 2
Use a clear 4-paragraph structure: Introduction (paraphrase + thesis) → Body 1 → Body 2 → Conclusion. Never write a 5th paragraph — it wastes time without improving your score.
Speaking
Record yourself on your phone and listen back critically. Focus on eliminating long pauses, filler words, and repetition. Fluency matters more than a "perfect accent" for Nepali candidates.
Mock Tests
Take at least 4–5 complete timed mock exams before test day. Simulate real exam conditions: no phone, strict timing, formal environment. Analyze every wrong answer after each mock.
🎯

Most preparation institutes in Nepal recommend 6–8 weeks of structured coaching followed by 3–4 weeks of independent mock tests and revision. Begin preparation at least 3 months before your target exam date.

Frequently Asked Questions

For Australian universities, most require an overall IELTS of 6.0–6.5, with no individual band below 6.0. For Australian skilled migration (General), the requirement is typically 6.0 in each band. UK universities generally require 6.5 overall. Always check the specific requirements of your target institution as they can vary significantly.
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the date of the test. Most universities and immigration authorities require your test scores to fall within this 2-year validity window at the time of submission. There is no option to extend the validity — you must retake the test if it expires.
Both formats test the same content with the same scoring system, and results are equally accepted everywhere. The key differences: Computer-based results are available in 3–5 days vs 13 days for paper-based; computer-based is slightly cheaper (NPR 33,000 vs NPR 36,200); and the Speaking test is still conducted face-to-face with an examiner in both cases. Many students find computer-based typing faster than handwriting for the Writing module.
There is no official limit on the number of times you can take IELTS. You can register for and sit the exam as many times as you need. Only your best valid score within the 2-year window needs to be submitted to institutions. However, we recommend spacing attempts at least 4–6 weeks apart to allow adequate preparation time.
IELTS preparation course fees in Nepal typically range from NPR 6,000 to NPR 18,000 for a complete 5–8 week program, depending on the institute and format (online vs offline). Online programs tend to be slightly more affordable. Many institutes offer free demo classes — always attend a demo session before enrolling.
Choose IELTS Academic if you are applying to undergraduate or postgraduate university programs. Choose IELTS General Training if you are applying for skilled migration to countries like Australia, Canada, or the UK, or for vocational training. If in doubt, check the specific requirements of your destination country or institution — they will specify which type is required.
